Real Green Weddings
Sarah Moak and Justin Hyman were married at the Watson residence in Austin, TX on March 28, 2009.
About the Couple
Justin and Sarah met via Myspace.com in the summer of 2006. At the time, Justin was working for the Alamo Drafthouse and was in charge of managing their Myspace page. When Sarah friended the Alamo, Justin noticed. As Sarah recalled, he then “wooed me with his humor and promises of movie screenings. That's how it all began.” Their first date was a sneak screening of the kids’ movie Monster House.
The couple enjoys movies, all things Star Trek, and spending time with their four pets, who all inexplicably have the last name “Cooper.” Avid foodies, Sarah and Justin celebrate every New Year’s Eve together with a new culinary experience.
The Decision to Go Green
The move toward eco-conscious living in Austin has had a profound affect on the couple. “When Justin and I moved in together, we made a conscious decision to have a more eco-friendly life, and this goal became even more pronounced when we moved out of an apartment and into a house, which allowed us to pursue more of our green goals.”
These goals translated into a desire for an environmentally responsible wedding. “While going green was, in a way, a theme for our wedding, it was not a trend. For us, [going green for our wedding] was a way for one of the biggest events in our lives to have as little environmental impact as possible.”
Photography
One of their inital green steps was choosing Arol J. Horkavy Photography for their wedding photos. He uses an entirely digital system, which cuts down on paper and eliminates the use of developing chemicals. “Booking Arol was one of the first decisions we made in the planning process, and we haven't regretted it. He has been nothing but nice, communicative, and professional.”
Justin and Sarah’s wedding, chock full of quirky, cool details, is a perfect indication that having a green wedding doesn’t mean sacrificing style or personality. The couple wove their love of Star Trek and Converse sneakers into an event that was still eco-conscious, and elegant, and fun.
