Real Green Weddings
In addition to all the green elements used the day of the wedding and during the honeymoon, Justin and Sarah “purchas[ed] carbon offsets for our guests’ and our own electricity and automotive usage to create a carbon neutral event.” Through the I Do Foundation, they set up their registry so that 5% of the cost of online gift purchases would be donated to Earth Share of Texas, a well-respected environmental charity. They recycled all wrapping and packaging from their gifts, and are “using Italian fashion magazine pages from our honeymoon for the envelopes for our recycled thank-you notes.”
Sarah and Justin’s wedding had everything they wanted, and nothing they didn’t need. “Green weddings are becoming more mainstream, but your best resources are still going to be alternative ones, like The Green Bride Guide. It's also important to remember that green should be a goal and not a theme. Green (or green-washed) stuff is really being marketed right now, but the greenest thing you can do for a wedding is to cut back. You need to be able to separate what's really important from what's just window-dressing.”
