Justin and Sarah honeymooned in Italy, and were pleased to encounter many earth-friendly elements during their trip. “Italy (and pretty much Europe in general) is wholly eco-conscious. The bathrooms [in our hotels] had two buttons, a soft and a hard flush, and the lights were all on timers or motion sensitive. We drove through the Italian countryside in a Smart car that we nicknamed ‘Smarty.’” They visited Rome, Florence, Pisa, and the coastal towns of San Vincenzo and the Cinque Terre villages, and found themselves dining on delicious local, seasonal specialties as a result of the “slow food” movement in Italy. An oppositional response to the appearance of “fast food” restaurants, the “slow food” movement has a number of eco-friendly objectives, including the promotion of local and traditional foods and organic farming practices, and the celebration of regional cuisines.
“One of our favorite parts was the four days we stayed at an ‘agriturismo,’ or farm-based bed-and-breakfast in San Vincenzo, a small touristy beach town on the Etruscan Coast. It was there that we got to move at a slower pace and just enjoy the scenery, the food, and the friendly people.”
